November, 2023
Last week (November 8, 2023) we made our very first compost pile using a mixture of browns (leaves and cardboard), and greens (kitchen scraps donated by the neighborhood). This pile was approximately 3' by 3' by 3'. It did warm up fairly quickly and the hottest temperature we recorded was 96 degrees. Unfortunately this is not hot enough for truly active compost and so a week later on November 15, 2023 we fully aerated the pile by moving it 5 feet, further breaking up larger scraps as we went. We added the newly collected kitchen scraps, water, and more carbon. The new pile is significantly larger (see the slideshow for a photo!). Approximately 15 hours after its creation, the pile was 82 degrees, then after 37 hours we recorded 108 degrees (for comparison the ground temperature was 50 degrees). Our compost pile is officially active. Stay tuned for more updates!
